This is a nice feature for Mac users who chat with Google Hangout and leave a web browser window open to do so, since you’ll be able to communicate and message through Google Hangouts (aka modern Google Talk) but directly in the same Messages app you use for iMessage communication on the Mac. MacOS is the operating system that powers every Mac. It lets you do things you simply can’t with other computers. That’s because it’s designed specifically for the hardware it runs on — and vice versa. MacOS comes with an entire suite of beautifully designed apps.

- Easy to use. Start calling or texting with minimum tap. More features coming soon.

Answer: none. Reason: none of the existing native clients support group chat -- meaning you can only chat one-on-one. Rendering the concept of a 'hangout' pretty moot. FYI, none of the native apps support video either.

This is likely because Google uses their their own extension of xmpp called jingle. Whilst jingle *is* released to the public, the exact manner in which Google employs this protocol is not understood. Thus, the only real option is to use the Chrome extension for Hangouts. Which is *not* native.

This means you have to keep a browser tab open all the time, slowly getting more and more miserable and slowly migrating away from Google despite your desire to do so. I use the Google Chrome extension for Google Talk - here's the link - It's a great plugin, and you don't even have to have any Chrome windows open for it to work - it sits in a separate window. As far as I know it's the only chat client which fully supports Google's chat history feature which is integrated into the gmail webmail. This means when you open a new message window it'll show you all the previous messages from that person including ones which were sent when offline.

That's something none of the other chat clients supports, and it's a dealbreaker for me. After much pain and searching I stumbled across the following. Supports groups and is cross platform!

Full feature list as of 2015.10: Send/receive chat messages Create/change conversations (rename, add people) Leave/delete conversation Notifications Toggle notifications on/off Drag-drop, copy-paste or attach-button for image upload. Hangupsbot sync room aware (no bot name, proper user pics) Show inline images Send presence/focus/typing/activeclient to behave like a proper client History scrollback Video/audio integration (open in chrome) Focus/typing indications (mainly a design issue. Keep it clean). I don't have an answer, but Adium is not a valid answer. Google's naming is confusing, but here's the deal: Adium supports Google Talk, which is Google's IM (text-based message) service that is jabber-based.
